Koi Milan Bahana Soch Laeen - Maulvi Ahmed Hassan Akhtar Bheranwale

$

This recording of Maulvi saheb from Faisalabad in the 70' demonstrates what wonderful singers
they were and provides an insight into how Maulvi Haider Hassan's singing must have evolved
over the years.

Dohas at the start (in Punjabi) are translated below in English:
mein rogi, merey rog aval ne
o dassan kerey kerey
dil da booha khula tak ke
 o aan vardey vich vere
 je daravan mool ni darde
o agay'on karam bakhairey
 dhakkay maran bahar kaddan
o ho ho baindey nerey

 trans: Musab Bin Noor
I am a sufferer, my ills are unique;
how do I begin describing them?
Seeing the door of my heart ajar,
 they've crept inside
My threats don't seem to dissuade them,
instead they wreak ever more havoc
Every time I push them out,
 they creep nearer and nearer

Maulvi Akhter then sings two mahiyaas in thaith Punjabi
A colorful loom, with an axle made of caper-wood
Your sorrow has drunk all the blood from my body
A colorful loom, with shiny baubles.
As I said goodbye to my beloved, my eyes welled up with tears

Then Maulvi Ahmed sings a Kafi of Khwaja Ghulam Fareed Sb (RA)
I'd rather die than leave the village of my beloved
The memory of my wounds and sorrows will follow me to the grave
I'll prostate myself again and again on the footprints my beloved has left behind
Ghulam Fareed, let no one lose their beloved at such a tender age.

Ay chehra-e zeba-e tu - Hazrat Amir Khusrau

Recital at the recent Jashn-e-Khusrau Festival arranged by IPAC and Kuch Khaas in Islamabad.
Here "Ay chehra-e zeba-e tu rashk-e butan-e azari" is appropriately followed by
the Khusrau kalam "Tori Soorat ke Balhari Nijam"

Ay chehra-e zeba-e tu rashk-e butan-e azari;
Har chand wasfat mikunam dar husn-az-aan zebatari.
Aafaq ra gar deedah am mehr-e butan warzeedah am;
Bisyar khuban deedah am lekin tu cheez-e degari.
Man tu shudam, tu man shudi, man tan shudam, tu jan shudi;
Taakas nagoyad baad azeen man deegaram tu deegari.
Khusrau ghareeb ast-o gada uftadah dar shehr-e shuma;
Baashad ki az behr-e khuda, su-e ghareeban bangari.

Eng Trans:

O you whose beautiful face is the envy of the idols of Azar
(Abraham's father and famous idol maker);
You remain superior to my praise.
All over the world have I traveled;
many a maiden’s love have I tasted;
Many a beauty-star have I seen; but you are something unique.
I have become you, and you me; I have become the body,
you the soul; So that none hereafter may say
that “I am someone and you someone else.”
Khusro a beggar, a stranger has come wandering to your town;
For the sake of god, have pity on this beggar
and do not turn him away from your door.

Bhala Hua Meri Matki Phoot Gayee - Kabir

Thank you O Lord! that this pitcher is broken.
No more filling it up, No guards now and worries none

Gulzar so eloquently presents the introduction to Abida's recital of Kabir's poetry. He talks of how, like other Sufis, Kabir embraces death with casual familiarity. How the concept takes different shapes, and how saints find rebirth in different ways in the life hereafter. Kabir's death was the last lesson of his life, but his poetry lives on to guide us always

Bhala Hua Meri Matki Phoot Gayee
Mein to Paneeyan Bharan se Chhoot Gayee

Bhala Hua Meri Matki Phoot Gayee
Mein to Paneeyan Bharan se Chhoot Gayee

Thank you O Lord! that this pitcher is broken.
No more filling it up, No guards now and worries none

Bura Jo Daikhan Mein Chala,
Bura na Mileya KoeJo Dil Khoja Apna,
to Mujh sa Bura na Koe

When I went in search of faulty ones,
I found none,
When I looked into my own heart,
None were faultier than me.

Yeh to Ghar Hai Prem ka,

Khala Ka Ghar Nae
Sees Utaarey bhuen Dharey,
Kat Baitthe Ghar Mahin

Beware! This is the abode of Pure Love,
Nothing to do with name and forms,
Enter here humbled, devoid of pride,
Only then you may take your seat here.

Haman hai Ishq Mastana

Haman ko Hosheyari kya
Rahay Azaad Ya Jag Se

Haman Duniya Se Yaari Kya

I am bursting with love,
Why do I need to be careful?
Being free in the world,
What of the worlds friendship do I need?

Kehna Tha so Keh Diya

Ab Kachhu Kaha Na Jaaye
Aik Gaya so Ja Raha
Darya Lehr Samae

What had to be said has been said
There is nothing left to say
If one leaves, so he may
The Wave too shall blend into the RIver
Lali more lal ki,

Jit Daikhan tit lal.
Lali Daikhan main gayi,

so Main bhi ho gayi lal

I see the Divine light inside,
outside, and everywhere.
By looking constantly at the divine light of God
even I have become godly.
Hans hans kunt na paya

Jin paya tin roye

Haansi khaeley Peeya Mile

to Kon Suhagan Hoe
No one realizes his Beloved while enjoying worldly pleasures
Those who realize God, did so by feeling pangs of separation
If one were able to realize God while involved in enjoyment
Then who will remain unfortunate?

Ja Ko raaton Saayian
Maar sake na koi.
Baal na baanka kar sake

Jo Jag Bairi hoe

No one can ever slay a man
under God’s protection.
Nor a hair on his head be touched
even if the world opposes him

Prem na Baazi Upjey

Prem Na Haath Bitae
Raja Parja Jis Ruche,
Sees Deyi Lae Jae
Love is not grown in the field,
and it is not sold in the market
But a king or a pauper would
Offer their head to acquire it.

Sukhiya sab sansar hai,
Khaye aur soye
Dukhiya das kabir hai, Jaage aur roye

The world is joyfull
That eats, drinks and is in peace
Fated but is poor Kabir (the seeker)
Stays awake and weeps

Jo Kachu Kiya so Tum Kiya
Mein Kuch Kiya Nahi.
Kahe Koi Jo Mein Kiya,
Tum Hi Thae Mujh Mahi.
What I achieved was due to you, Oh Lord
For I did nothing on my own accord
If one were to claim credit for ones deed
It was all due to your guidance

Hangama-e-gham se tang aa ker, izhaar-e-musarat ker baithhe
Mashhoor thi apni zinda-dilli, daanista shararat ker baithhe

Shakeel Badauni
Diwanon ko tum ne chehra diya. Wallah qayamat ker baithe

Her cheez nahin ik markaz per, ik roz idhar ik roz udhar
Nafrat se na daikho dushman ko, shayad vo muhabbat ker baithhe

Allah to sab ki sunta hai, jurrat hai Shakeel apni apni
Hali ne zuban se uff bhi na ki, Iqbal shikayat ker baithe

All life is voyaging, all life in motion,
Moon, stars, and creatures of air and ocean.

Tu Mard-e-Maidan, Tu Mir-e-Lashkar
Noori Huzoori Tere Sipahi

To you the champion, the lord of battle,
Bright angels offer their swords’ devotion—

Kuch Qadar Apni Tu Ne Na Jani
Ye Besawadi, Ye Kam Nigai !

But of that blindness, that caravan spirit!
Of your own greatness you have no notion.

Dunya-e-Doon Ki Kab Tak Ghulami
Ya Raahbi Kar Ya Padshahi

How long this bondage to darkness? Choose now:
A prince’s scepter, a hermit’s potion.

I know our priesthood, how faint in action,
In sermons pouring a languid lotion.

Yaron Mera Shikwa hi Bhala Kijiye os se - Khwaja Meer Dard

Ustad Manzoor Ahmed Khan Niazi Qawwal was the original leader of the Qawwal Bachay gharana that migrated to Karachi from Delhi. In the early years the party consisted of vigorous stalwarts including Ustad Bahauddin Khan and Munshi Raziuddin. By the time of this recital, his primary companion was his able son Abdullah Niazi who soon after succeeded the father in leading the qawwal party. The robust voice here is that of Abdullah, however the gentler atmosphere is created more by the older voice of Manzoor saheb who keeps dropping in and leading.

Yaron mera shikwa hi bhala kijiye os se
Mazkoor kisi se ja kijiye os se

Joon joon vo rooke hein to yaheen aven hein jeenein

~ Khwaja Meer Dard

beautiful girahs:

Ilahi tark-e-ulfat per vo kyonker yaad aate hein

Haqeeqat khul gayi Hasrat, terey tark-e-muhabbat ki
Tujhe vo ab to pehle se bhi bardh ker yaad aate hein

Nahi aati to yaad un ki mahino tak nahin aati
Magar jab yaad aate hein, to aksar yaad aate hein

Chaap Tilak - Hz. Amir Khusrau - The Amazing 40+ minute rendition

Starting with a lovely sazeena and continuing with a long satisfying alaap including taankari, this has got to be the mother of all Chaap Tilaks. .

I recall my friend Vaqar Ahmed sitting close to the qawwals and shaking his head with joy during the alaap. Seeing this body language Abu Muhammad briefly stopped midway and said "mulahiza farmaiye, mujhay barda maza aa raha hai. kuchh log jo yahan par gerdan hila ke jo tareef ker rahay hein. mujhe ehsaas ho raha hai ke classical bhi yahan bohat sarey log samajh rahe hein" . For those who haven't this 40 min+  rendition before it will be a special treat.

It develops from a slow and pensive tone to a robust finale and lots of ups and downs in between. baqaul Farid Ayaz saheb ke "ik behta huwa darya hai. lehron mein utrao chardhao ki tarah hai qawwali". This one contains a whole lot of beautiful girahbandi including verses from Kabir.

Finally a wonderful Khusrau tarana at 36.00 which is even more appealing with the powerful singing of the chorus. Enjoy!

Discovered another beautiful one. No need to to describe or translate this one.
It is fairly simple to understand and I found it quite charming. Enjoy!

Voh chilmun mein hai, tum ho baetab itne
jo chilmun uthha dee to phir kya karo ge

Tumhare dillon per achanak kisi ne
jo bijli gira di to phir kya karo ge

Unhein tum se mana muhabbat hai, laikin
bacho in haseeno ki tirchhi nazar se

Muhabbat ki shae per jafa ki chhuri bhi
tumhi per chala di to phir kya karo ge

Jawani bhi fitna fitna, adayen bhi fitna
murravvat bhi os ki, muhabbat bhi fitna

Qayamat mein os fitnagar ne nayii ik
qayamat uthha di to phir kya karo ge

Arre phir bhi ye bhi, tumhara ye alam
behekne lage lardkharane lage ho

Sharab-e-nazar jo piyalon mein os ne
zara si mila di to phir kya karo ge

Unhe tum se kitni muhabbat hai Asif
tumhari wafa per bhi naazaan hein leikin

Tumhari wafa bhi, yunhi chutkiyon mein
Uchhali urda di to phir kya karo ge

Gel Gör Beni Aşk Neyledi - Yunus Emre

Yunus Emre,  (born c. 1238, Turkey—died c. 1320, Turkey), was a poet and mystic who exercised a powerful influence on Turkish literature.

Though legend obscures the facts of his life, he is known to have been a Sufi who sat for 40 years at the feet of his master, Tapduk Emre. Yunus Emre was well versed in mystical philosophy, especially that of the 13th-century poet and mystic Jalāl ad-Dīn ar-Rūmī. Like Rūmī, Yunus Emre became a leading representative of mysticism in Anatolia but on a more popular level; he was venerated as a saint after his death.

His poems, which are devoted mainly to the themes of divine love and human destiny, are characterized by deep feeling. He wrote in a straightforward, almost austere style and mainly in the traditional syllabic metre of Anatolian folk poetry. His verse had a decisive influence on later Turkish mystics and inspired the poets of the renaissance of Turkish national poetry after 1910.

He was a contemporary of Rumi (as well as of Khusrau). Rumi composed his collection of stories and songs for a well-educated urban circle of Sufis, writing primarily in the literary language of Persian. Yunus Emre, on the other hand, traveled and taught among the rural poor, singing his songs in the Turkish language of the common people.

A story is told of a meeting between the two great souls: Rumi asked Yunus Emre what he thought of his great work the Mathnawi. Yunus Emre said, "Excellent, excellent! But I would have done it differently." Surprised, Rumi asked how. Yunus replied, "I would have written, 'I came from the eternal, clothed myself in flesh, and took the name Yunus.'" That story perfectly illustrates Yunus Emre's simple, direct approach that has made him so beloved.
