Lost in thought, this is the pensive and wistful mood of Farid Ayaz that I love most.

Preamble: Laagi Laagi sab kahein, laagi buri bala
Laagi to tab jaaniyo, jab aar paar hoee jaae ~ Kabir

----

Poet: Turab Hyderabadi

Neeki lagat mohe apnay piya ki
(Moray piya ki) Aankh raseeli jaado bhari

Nazar nay nazar mulaqat kar li (borrowed verse)
Rahay donon khamosh aur baat kat li

Chaen parat naahi mukh daikay bina
Daikh najar bhar jaat mari ray

Zehaal e Miskeen Makun Taghaful - Khusrau by Sabri brothers

As most readers no doubt know the unique thing about this Khusrau poem is the manner in which he shows his mastery over languages. Verses in Farsi are followed by verses Brij Bhasha to form an almost perfect poem that expresses his longing. Below the transliteration is also a translation in English.

Zeehaal-e miskeen makun taghaful,
duraye naina banaye batiyan;
ki taab-e hijran nadaram ay jaan,
na leho kaahe lagaye chhatiyan.

Shaban-e hijran daraz chun zulf
wa roz-e waslat cho umr kotah;
Sakhi piya ko jo main na dekhun
to kaise kaatun andheri ratiyan.

Yakayak az dil do chashm-e jadoo
basad farebam baburd taskin;
Kise pari hai jo jaa sunaave
piyare pi ko hamaari batiyan.

Cho shama sozan cho zarra hairan
hamesha giryan be ishq aan meh;
Na neend naina na ang chaina
na aap aaven na bhejen patiyan.

English Translation:(M. Rehman)

Do not overlook my misery by blandishing your eyes,
and weaving tales; My patience has over-brimmed,

O sweetheart, why do you not take me to your bosom.
Long like curls in the night of separation,
short like life on the day of our union;

My dear, how will I pass the dark dungeon night
without your face before.

Suddenly, using a thousand tricks,
the enchanting eyes robbed me of my tranquil mind;

Who would care to go and report this matter to my darling?
Tossed and bewildered, like a flickering candle,
I roam about in the fire of love;

Sleepless eyes, restless body,
neither comes she, nor any message.

Naina Morey Taras Gaye, Aaja Balam - Thumri by Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan

Of all the beautiful music coming out of Pakistan today surely this has got to be right among the top. For the last two years Lahore Music Forum is helping to showcase, record and produce classical and semi-classical music in Lahore and at times in Karachi. Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan was the highlight in a classical music concert organized by the Lahore Music Forum (LMF) at the Punjab Institute of Language Art and Culture (PILAC) on 9th November 2012.

 In his typically humble style, before starting the thumri, Ustad Mubarak says. "Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan ki yaad taza karni hai. Ye barde log thae. Ye hamaray liye school hein. in se hamain istefada karna chahiye. inhon ne ga baja ke naam kiya hai. aisaa gaye ke voh gana iss daur mein nahin hai. yaqeen karein" :-)

Har Shab Manam Futada - Hazrat Amir Khusrau

What a delight to see these young sons of the late Moin Niazi Qawwal recite in his signature style. I find their singing is filled with melody and sense of proportion and understanding. Mahera Omar has done a fine job of  presenting them in high definition and a crisp audio.

Har shab manam futada, Ba girde sarai e tou
 Har roz ah o nala kunam az barai e tou

every night have I fallen, around the circle of Thy tavern
 every day, do I wail and cry, in yearning of Thee

 Jana ba iin shakista dil-bewafa ma shou
 Umre guzasht ta shuda am aashina e tou

 O Love, turn not thy gaze from this broken hearted one
 for a lifetime has been spent, in getting to know Thee

Rozay ke zarra zarra shavad, ustakhan-e-man
 Ba shad hanoz dar dil-e-veesham hava e tou

 when my bones are nothing but shattered bits
 may my heart carry on its quest of Thee

 Bar hal-e-zar-e-man nazar-e-kun ze raahay lutf
 Tu Badshah-e-husni o Khusrau gada e tou

 Let thy Grace fall on my blighted self
 Thou art the Lord of Grace, and Khosro but a begger of Thee

The above recital by Abida Parveen lacks depth of feeling, however the words are special.

A beautiful 30 minute long naatiya recital by the late Munshi Raziuddin and Sons Qawwal Party. Here the Farsi kalam is masterfully interspersed by verses in Arabic and Urdu. The tone and pace of the recital is wonderfully contemplative and the party seem to be at their prime.

Sajda kar ke qadam-e-yaar pe qurbaan hona,

Mang, Phir Mang - Shikwa - Jawab e Shikwa

A couple of years ago I had the good fortune of sitting beside Moalana Manzoor in a local Montreal wedding. He was in a whimsical mood that day and started to recite the following verses.

"jo mangne ka tareeqa hai os tarah mango,
minnat se, khushamad se, adab se mango.
dey aye mere moala dey,
dey aye mere daata dey,
kuch sadqa-e-yasin dey,
kuch sadqa-e-taaha dey,
kuchh un ka tasaduq dey,
kuchh apna utara dey".

A bit to his surprise, I proceeded to complete them as they were somewhat familiar to me as well. Our conversation progressed to the beautiful poetry that was traditionally recited by qawwals in Hyderabad, Deccan.

In October 2012 again I was pleasantly reminded by behan Nasim Omer (Hyderabad) about this kalam. She had first heard it from the late Aziz Ahmed Warsi saheb. The kalam being one of my favorites, I promptly dug it out of storage, and much to Muslim bhai and Nevin's delight we sat down to listen to it together. It starts by telling the listener how he should beseech the Almighty. Shows us the right way of doing so, with humility and respect. Then there is the part when the listener is addressed by God himself asking them to come and ask for more, ask again (aa aa idhar aa, tu phir mang, phir mang) without regard for past sins or misdeeds, without regard for his faith or creed. He simply asks you to come to him in what is most typical of the inclusive sufiana way.

At 20 minutes the the raag changes and the shikwa begins "Kab tak mere Moala?". Around the 30th minute mark the master switches to "Jawab e Shikwa" and the original raag. This is truly a treasure for classical qawwali lovers. Enjoy!

"Har cheez Musabib-e-sabab se mango
minnat se, khushamad se, adab se mango

kyon ghair ke aage haath phailatey ho
bandey ho agar Rab ke to Rab se mango

kya faeda fikr-e-baisho kam se ho ga
ham kya hein, jo koi kaam hum se hoga

jo kuchh bhi hua, hua karam se tere
aur jo kucch ho ga, tere karam se hoga

dar dar kharab ansta phira ley ke iltija
paya na kahin manzil-e-maqsood ka pata

aakhir tere karam ne pukara, idhar to aa
aa phir idhar aa, tu phir mang phir mang"

Kabhi Aye Haqeeqat-e-Muntazar by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan from Tasawwuf

Kabhi aye Haqeeqat-e-muntazar, nazar aa libas-e-majaz mein
ke hazar sajde tarap rahe hain meri jabeen-e-niaz mein

For once, O awaited Reality, reveal Yourself in a form material,
For a thousand prostrations are quivering eagerly in my submissive brow

Tu bacha bacha ke na rakh Issey, tera aaeena hai voh aaeena
ke shikast ho to aziz tar hai nigah-e-aaeena saaz mein

Do not try to protect them, your mirror is the mirror
Which would be dearer in the Maker's eye if they broken are

Na kaheen jahan mein amaan milli, jo amaan milli to kahan milli
mere jurm-e-khana kharab ko, tere afw-e-banda nawaz mein

My dark misdeeds found no refuge in the wide world—
The only refuge they found was in Your Gracious Forgiveness

Na voh ishq mein raheen garmiyaan, na voh husn mein raheen shaukiyan
na voh ghaznavi mein tarrap rahi, na kham hai zulf-e-zyaz mein

Neither love has that warmth, nor beauty has that humour
Neither that restlessness in Ghaznavi nor those curls in the hair locks of Ayaz are,

Jo mein sar basajda huwa kabhi, to zameen se aane lagi sada
tera dil to hai sanam aashna, tujhe kya miley ga namaz mein

Even as I laid down my head in prostration a cry arose from the ground:
Your heart is in materialism, no rewards for your prayers are.

~ Muhammad Iqbal

Every now and then I like to post a nazm that simply touches me and has little to do with sufi music.

Loved this one by Qateel Shifai and sung beautifully by Radhika Chopra. Composition by Shanti Hiranand in a mix of Raag Des and Malhar.

Door tak chhayae thay baadal, or kahin sayaa na tha

Ho gaye qallaash jab say, aas ki doulat lutti
Paas apnay or tu, koi bhi sarmaaya na tha

Sirf khushboo ki kami thi, moasam-e-gul mein Qateel
Verna gulshan mein koi bhi phool murjhaya na tha

Iss tarha barsaat ka mousam, kabhi aaya na tha.......

English Translation:

Tonight there came a news that you, oh beloved, would come –
Be my head sacrificed to the road along which you will come riding!
All the gazelles of the desert have put their heads on their hands
In the hope that one day you will come to hunt them….
The attraction of love won’t leave you unmoved;
Should you not come to my funeral,
you’ll definitely come to my grave.
My soul has come on my lips (e.g. I am on the point of expiring);
Come so that I may remain alive -
After I am no longer – for what purpose will you come?

 Riyaaz Qawwali released their debut CD

(HOUSTON, 28 May 2013) Featuring the poetry of mystics from the Indian sub-continent such as Hazrat Amir Khusro, Sant Kabir, Guru Ravidass and Baba Bulleh Shah, Riyaaz Qawwali is set to release their debut CD— “KASHTI,” at The Asia Society Texas Center. The musical ensemble represents a very unique genre of music, and one of the only qawwali groups in the whole country. The Debut will culminate into an event which will take place on Saturday, June 15. The CD promises to provide the listener with songs that speak of love, devotion, and longing.

Led by Sonny Mehta, Riyaaz Qawwali is proud to announce the launch of ‘Kashti’—the first album in the music industry that incorporates ideas and poetry from various faiths whilst extending the unique musical idiom of qawwali. The CD features two tracks that emerge from the holy scriptures of Sikhism, two tracks that surface from the ‘Sufi’ waters of South Asia, and two tracks that embody the Hindu faith.

The group is grateful to the music teachers, parents and fans for their unrelenting support of the group which has helped them uphold the ethos of qawwali. After a successful fundraising campaign last August, the group worked diligently to record this album. Each track in this album is infused with elements native to the qawwali genre and components that resonate with today’s listeners.

“...[Riyaaz Qawwali] mesmerized the audience with their singing … the virtuoso performance of the group leader, Sonny, impressed the audience tremendously. At the request of the audience members, the group sang a classical Qawwali bandish in Raag Bhairavi and enchanted the audience with their command of the raag. Their masterful rendition of this and other Qawwalis brought back memories of the late Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan who introduced the tradition of Qawwali to the west”Austin South Asian

“I took my 3-year-old son to a performance of music by Riyaaz Qawwali with plans to duck out [of] the back if he started getting fidgety. He was enthralled and then fell asleep. I can't think of a more spiritual being that you could actually hold in your arms than a small child who has just been lulled to sleep with total faith in your embrace and sacred music permeating his brain. Thank you Riyaaz Qawwali for an experience I will treasure forever”Beth Ortuño

For more event details, visit http://asiasociety.org/texas. Riyaaz Qawwali was established in 2006 in Austin, Texas and is led by Sonny Mehta, a classically trained musician. Their music is symbolized by dynamic rhythmic cycles, uplifting melodies and improvisational poetry. For more details about Riyaaz Qawwali, visit www.riyaazqawwali.com. You can also follow them on Facebook, Youtube and Twitter. Riyaaz Qawwali's CD Kashti is available for for $15.

True to his Ustad JHKB, Wajahat Hussain Khan Badauni recites in his melodious voice filled with longing and love. It is often said that qawwals are the masters of the word whereas Khayal singers are masters of singing, however listening to this Barauni style of singing it is difficult to find fault.

Naina moray tumhri raah takat hein
ayiho ayiho kab tum baalam

birha ki ratiya kaisay katay ab
garva lagayiho kab tum baalam

preet ke karan ye gat bhayii hai
sudbud bisri daiko muraari

aas mori ab tumhi se laagi
poori kariho kab tum baalam

tum se bichhard ker jii na sakoon gi
dard-e-judai seh na sakoon gi

duar kardey tori raah takat hun
ghar aao ge kab tum baalam

prem ki man mein jot jagi hai
tosay millan ki aas lagi hai
