When it comes to classical qawwali singing in Punjabi, these Makha Leeran Walay qawwal are
truly amazing and steeping in the art and poetry.

Particularly enjoyed the use of violin and clarinet as accompaniment and the beautiful words of devotion such as "mein gird gird zakhm dikhawan, sadkey jawan". A real delight for Punjabi lovers. Enjoy!

Qaseeda Burda Shareef - Najmuddin, Saifuddin Qawwal Brothers

Also known as Qaṣīdat al-Burda in Arabic was a much larger poem (Naat) than is usually recited.
It was written by Imam Al Busiri in praise if Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

It is said that Busiri who was paralysed and bed-ridden for several years was visited by Muhammad (SAW), who spread his black shawl (Burda) on him, thereby curing him. Often the poem is recited to help cure ailments in addition to simply being recited as a Naat at suitable occasions.

Najmuddin & Saifuddin Qawwals are sons of the late Ustad Bahauddin Khansaheb and live in Karachi, Pakistan.

Teri Re Mein Tau Charan Lagi - Ustad Bahauddin Qawwal

The first line was composed by Nizamuddin Auliya himself, while observing from the Chilla how Hindu worshippers bathed in river Jumna:

Every people has its right path, its faith and its focus of worship

Amir Khusrau, who was with him, at once completed the couplet with a verse line which has come to represent a poetic statement of the Sufi creed:

I, however, focus my worship on the tilted cap of my Beloved

Ghut ke undar baith key karain prem se piyar
Ayse piya say Khusro apna tan-man deejay var

Teri Re Mein Tau Charan Lagi, Peer Nizamuddain, Khwaja Nizamuddin
I have embraced your feet, O Saint Nizamuddin, O Khwaja Nizamuddin

Har qaum rast ra he, deen-e-wa qibla gahe,
Mun qibla rast kardam, bar samt kajkullahe.

Every people has its right path, its faith and its focus of worship (Qibla),
I, however, focus my worship on the tilted cap of my Beloved (Nizamudin Aulia)

There has always been a gentle softness to Jafar sahebs style of singing
that I so love. He manages to get to the essence of the poetry with
such wonderful ease and never waivers from his melodious recital.

the melodious voice of jafar husain khan baduni

Tori surat ke balihari, Nijaam

Sab sakhiyan mein chundar mori mailee,
Dekh hansain nar naari,
Ab ke bahar chundar mori rang de,
Piya rakh lay laaj hamari, Nijaam.
Sadqa baba Ganj-e-Shakar ka,
Rakh lay laaj hamari, Nijaam.
Qutab, Farid mil aaye barati,
'Khusrau' raajdulaari, Nijaam.
Kouo saas kouo nanad say jhagday,
Hamko aas tihaari, Nijaam.
Tori surat ke balihari, Nijaam.

Beholding your appearance, Oh Nijaam
I offer myself in sacrifice.
Amongst all the girls, my scarf is the most soiled,
Look, the girls are laughing at me.
This spring, please dye my scarf for me,
Oh Nijaam, protect my honour.
In the name of Ganj-e Shakar (Nizamuddin Aulia's pir),
Protect my honour, Oh beloved Nijaam.
Qutab and Farid have come in the wedding procession,
And Khusrau is the loving bride, Oh Nijaam.
Some have to fight with the mother-in-law,
While some with sisters-in-law,
But I have you for support, Oh Nijaam.

Mein Maili, Tan Mera Maila - Nizami Brothers

$

This beautiful kalam in fond praise of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) depicts the hindustani andaaz in which much of the language is hindi and helps create a larger appeal. Words like lajpaal, kirpa, and daya are relatively unfamiliar in the present Pakistani milieu, but were often used in many sufiyana kalam of India in order to attract the non-muslim population to the Sufi Shrines of Delhi.

The poet talks of coming on the day of judgement, bearing a burden of his sins and beseeching the Prophet to intervene on his behalf with God to ask for forgiveness. Gender reversal which is also quite common in such poetry of dargaahs is also used here.

Ghulam Sabir & Ghulam Waris are better known as Nizami qawwals and are Nizamuddin Awlia's resident Qawwals. They hail from the Delhi Gharana of singers.

Mein Maili Tan Mera Maila from Tasawwuf

Ghulam Sabir & Ghulam Waris recite in praise of Muhammad (PBUH)
Nizami Brothers from Dehli

Mein maili, tan mera maila, kirpa karo sarkaar,
Nazr e karam sarkaar, Ya Muhammad

Sar pe uthha kar paap ki gathri,
aayee hun tumhrey duar
Nazr e karam sarkaar, ya Muhammad

Merey kiwaiyya, beech bhanwar mein, kashti dub na jaaye
Tera hun, tu meri khabar le, kon lagaaye paar

Jiss ko bhi sarkar nawazein, yeh hai unki marzi
Chalti donon jahan mein unki, maalik hein mukhtaar
Nazr e karam sarkaar, ya Muhammad

Nazar ban ke, aankhon mein aaye Muhammad
Sukoon ban ke dil mein samaaye Muhammad
Tamasha ye daikho, jahhanun ki aatish, lagaye Khuda, aur bujhaye Muhammad
Ke Muhammad ki shaan e shafaat to daikho, ke pakrde Khuda aur chhurdaye Muhammad

Museebat se fursat naheen milne waali
Aur qayamat mein rahat naheen milne waali
Khuda to zindagi, daeta bhi hai, laeta bhi hai laikin
Mere sarkaar jo daete hein vo wapis nahin laete

Chalti donon jahan mein unki, maalik hein mukhtaar
Nazr e karam sarkaar, ya Muhammad

Nazr e karam sarkaar, Nazr e karam sarkaar

Poet: Thomas Moore (1779 - 1852 / Dublin / Ireland)
Poet (translation from English to Urdu): Nadir Kakorvi (born 1857)
Singer: Reshma
-(Born in Rajasthan to a Gypsy family in 1947)

Oft, in the stilly night,
Ere slumber's chain has bound me,
Fond memory brings the light
Of other days around me;
The smiles, the tears,
Of boyhood's years,
The words of love then spoken;
The eyes that shone,
Now dimm'd and gone,
The cheerful hearts now broken!
Thus, in the stilly night,
Ere slumber's chain hath bound me,
Sad memory brings the light
Of other days around me.

When I remember all
The friends, so link'd together,
I've seen around me fall,
Like leaves in wintry weather;
I feel like one
Who treads alone
Some banquet-hall deserted,
Whose lights are fled,
Whose garlands dead,
And all but he departed!
Thus, in the stilly night,
Ere slumber's chain has bound me,
Sad memory brings the light
Of other days around me.

English Translation:

Calling out Maula Maula! Maula still escapes us.
We only play with words, meaning still escapes us.

Who understands the word Water as Water,is a fool,
He will keep chanting Water Water and will die of thirst.

By chanting Fire Fire, the lips don't feel the heat,
Place one ember on the lips, then see how they burn.

He who contents himself with names, end up loosing the Named.
The fools who puts in no effort amuse themselves with Name

-------

Jo pani ke naam ko pani jaane, naadaani hai

Ism pe Qaane hone waala aur musamma khone waala

Q A U L - by Wajahat Hussain Khan Qawwal

The melodious voice of Wajahat Husain Khan Badauni

I had been looking for Wajahat Hussain Khan Badauni for a while. Always wondered how the descendants of one of the greatest voices in qawwali (Jafar Husain Khan Badauni) could just disappear from public view.  I tried to ask people of his whereabouts but had no success. For those of you who do not know of him, Wajahat is the grandnephew of the late Qawwali Ustad Jafar Hussain Khasaheb of Badaun. I even asked Yousuf Saeed in Delhi, a Khusrau enthusiast, thinking that he would surely know. Yousuf had been to Badaun many years back and met Jafar saheb, however did not have any further information about the next generation of qawwals.

Then quite by coincidence, and to my delight, I was recently contacted by his young nephew Nadeem Khan who is a classical singer based in Delhi (cousin of Ustad Rashid Khan) and sent me this lovely CD. Nadeem and Wajahat are both from the Rampur Sehaswan Gharana and Wajahat Hussain Khan is the grandson and disciple of legendary Ustad Nissar Hussain Khansahab.

Born in Badaun, Wajahat was associated with Jafar sahab at an early age due to his keen interest in Sufi music and started performing regularly ever since. An experienced qawwal of 45 now, Wajahat is recognized by most in the qawwali fraternity for his musical prowess and understanding of 'gayaki'. His wonderfully melodious style is quite similar to that of his granduncle. Enjoy the music!

I am hoping that from all the qawwali lover out there all over the world, some will take an interest in Wajahat Hussain Khan Qawwal party and will host the singer. In sab ki hosla afzai karna ham sab pe farz hai. achhay sunnein waaley kay bhi kuchh faraez hotay hein aakhir.

that till the artist gets love from the audiences, they stay alive, even when she will have died, her
songs will continue. Even if the Indian government doesn't give her a visa, her voice will reach
India without it :-).
