Kalam: Baba Bulleh Shah
Jahan e Khusrau Festival 2010

Ab ham aise gum hue, Prem nagar ke shehr
Apne aap nun sudh rahe hein, Na sir, hath, na pair
Khudi khoii apna ped chita, Tab hoi gal khaer
Laththe dhagde pahile ghar thi, Kaun kare nirvaer.
Bullah shah hai dohi jehane, koi na na dasda ghair

~Bulleh Shah

trans:
Now I am lost in the abode of the Beloved
Searching for the Self, oblivious of my surroundings
Having shed my ego, I found self awareness
Bulleh Shah! the Beloved is present in both worlds.
None have said otherwise.

Here the Wadalis have added the Iqbal verse on "Khudi"

Khudi ko kar buland itna, ke har taqder se pehle.Khuda bande se ye poche, bata teri raza kia hai

GhulamFarid& Maqbool Sabri were the first qawwals that I had the privilege of listening to live. That was in the mid sixties. I was eight then and remember well that their voices were absolutely mesmerizing then as they are now in these old recordings. Afsoske Farid Sabri kuchhjaldichalbassay. He has however left us with the treasure of his beautiful recitals.

English Trans:

Whole universe is filled with your light,
The moon and all life are your manifestation.

One who is aware of the secrets of Muhammad (SAW), knows
You are the light of every spark, every stone belongs to you.

Every eye beholds your face, O Beloved!
In every ear is filled the roar of your manifestation.

When the heart is convinced that you O Lord are everything,
Then how can presence be distant from the heart.

The sight of the extreme truth does not appeal, O preacher!
You can keep the virgin of paradise and sin for yourself.

The abundance of creation, is in fact the manifestation of your Oneness
Only if one's wisdom could evolve to decipher the truth.

If the expression of Independence occurs from 'Niyaz',
O beloved ! It is only because this human being is filled with your pride.

The Unseen and Unknown's follower am I
Intioxicated by the tresses that can niether be pulled nor passed by

A fire rages from afar,, from the thirst that lies within
the sweet nectar I am shown but not allowed to taste

O Lord, what agony is this caged bird suffering
when its sacrifice is not desired, nor release allowed

The chest has been rent assunder, the heart in tatters
and yet these igonorant ones dont allow me to tear off my raimant

Hundreds of thorns has Khosrow borne, in seperation from Thee
O woe, that not a flower from Thy garden am I allowed to pluck

Agar Kaj Ro Hain Anjum, Asman Tera Hai Ya Mera
Mujhe Fikar-e-Jahan Kyun Ho, Jahan Tera Hai Ya Mera

If the stars have strayed—To whom do the heavens belong, You or Me
Why must I worry about the world—To whom does this world belong, You or Me

Agar Hangama Ha’ay Shauq Se Hai La-Makan Khali
Khata Kis Ki Hai Ya Rab! La-Makan Tera Hai Ya Mera

If the Placeless Realm Offers no lively scenes of passion and longing,
Whose fault is that, my Lord?—Does that realm belong to You or to me?

Usse Subah-e-Azal Inkaar Ki Juraat Hui Kyun Kar
Mujhe Maloom Kya, Woh Raazdan Tera Hai Ya Mera?

On the morning of eternity he dared to say ʹNoʹ,
But how would I know why—Is he Your confidant, or is he mine?

Muhammad (S.A.W.) Bhi Tera, Jibreel Bhi, Quran Bhi Tera
Magar Ye Harf-e-Shireen Tarjuman Tera Hai Ya Mera?

Muhammad (PBUH) is Yours, Gabriel is Yours, The Qurʹan is Yours—
But this discourse, This exposition in melodious tunes, Is it Yours or is it mine?

Issi Koukab Ki Tabani Se Hai Tera Jahan Roshan
Zawal-e-Adam-e-Khaki Zayan Tera Hai Ya Mera?

Your world is illuminated by the radiance of the same star
Whose loss was the fall of Adam, that creature of earth, Was it Yours or mine?

Mirza Abdul Qadir Bedil

Today I went out looking for an audio CD by the Afghan classical singer Ustad Mohammad Hussain Sarahang. There are three Afghan grocery stores around our neighborhood here in Quebec and to my delight I found a CD entitled "Tarke Arezoo" in one of these stores.

The first track in this wonderful collection is a 6 minute tarana by Amir Khusraw which I will post later. When I searched on youtube I discovered that the rare qawwali "Tark e Arezoo Kerdam" was of course there all along. Hope you enjoy Sarahang's endearing style as much as I did.

English Translation - Musab Bin Noor

Forsaking all desires, the sorrows of existence becomes easier to bear,
destroying the urge to spread my wings, transformed my cage into a garden

The World has been levelled by the force of my madness
The flood of my lamentations has submerged everything; mountains, deserts and valleys.

The silence in my bosom has spawned a cacophony of noise
I planted the Self inside my heart, like the root that sprouts into a reed-bed.

Wherever I cast my eye, thoughts of myself interrupt me
Every petal, every flower in this garden reminds me of my tattered garment.

O pious one, why such vanity over the clearness of your heart?
What are mirrors for, other than to satisfy the vanity of the preening and the vain?

Your love is polluted with complaint, that’s why your heart remains disconsolate to this day
Let hopelessness flood over your heart, so that the House becomes vacant and desolate.

If we have torn our pockets in desperation, let our hands rend our cloaks instead
O madness, whisk me away to the desert, where a new Spring awakens.

We are subservient to Fate, humility pervades our words and deeds
We have been given just enough Free Will to realize that we are helpless.

Are my senses departing at the speed of light, or is it the thought of seeing You?
Like Harmal-seeds burning on charcoal, I see a flashing light in the distance.

Bedil, the dust of my terror and desolation has been well nurtured and protected
If I spread my cloak and release it, your tresses will be left disheveled and unkempt.

Voh Soorat e Ilahi, Kis Des Basteeyan Hein

Voh soorat e Ilahi, kis des basteeyan hein
Ab jin ke daikhney ko, aankhein tarasteeyan hein

Barsat ka to moasam kab ka nIkal gaya par

Os shoakh ki nigahein, pathhar mein dhansteeyan hein

Qeemat un ki go ham, do jug ko dey chuke hein

Iss saal tu hai saaqi, aur mein-parasteeyan hein

Voh soorat e Ilahi, kis des basteeyan hein
Ab jin ke daikhney ko, aankhein tarasteeyan hein

Dil mein ab yun tere bhuule huye gham aate hain
jaise bichhade huye kaabe mein sanam aate hain

ik ik kar ke huye jaate hain taare raushan
meri manzil ki taraf tere qadam aate hain

raqs-e-may tez karo, saaz ki lay tez karo
suu-e-maikhaana safiiraan-e-haram aate hain

vo to jab aate hain maa_il-ba-karam aate hain

dil bhi kam dukhata hai vo yaad bhi kam aate hain

Can't resist adding this almost magical, slow and classical version of "Aao ge Jab Tum"

Rashid hints that having the complete music with his singing would have had a greater impact, however in my humble opinion there is something very special about this slow and simpler version.

Hazrat Shah Niyaz and Mirza Ghalib are brought together here with a bang.

Farid Ayaz masterfully weaves the verses of one poet with another here in this pensive and emotion filled rendition of Ishq Mein Tere Koh-e-Gham - عشق میں تیرے كوہ غم. The preamble is Ghalib's "Aah ko Chahiye ek Umr Asar Hone Tak".

The classical style of taankari and sargam is so beautiful and touches the soul. No doubt the enthusiasm of the live audience is enhancing the whole experience as the singers feed off their reactions. Love it when Farid goes "hai" at 8.11 (shareek e gham) feeling Ghalib's melancholy and pain.

Poet: Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib

Aah ko chahiye ek umr asar hone tak
Kaun jiitaa hai teri zulf ke sar hone tak

The sighs of love take a lifetime to realize
Who may live that long to see its effect on you?

Aashiqi sabr talab aur tamanna betaab
Dil ka kya rang karoon khoon-e-jigar hone tak

Love demands patience and yearning restless
How do I placate my heart till my destruction?

Humne maana ke tagaaful na karoge lekin
Khaak ho jayenge hum, tumko khabar hone tak

Though I believe you may not ignore me, but
I will turn into ashes by the time you understand my plight

Gham-e-hasti ka asad kis se ho juz marg ilaaz
Shamma har rang mein jalti hai sahar hone tak

O Asad!, There is no remedy for the anguish of living save death
The candle has to burn till morning no matter what

--------------------------------------------------

Poet: Hazrat Shah Niyaz Ahmed (R.A.)(1742 - 1834)

Ishq mein tere kohe gham, sar pe liya jo ho so ho
Aish'o nishaat'e zindagi, chhord diya jo ho so ho

Mujh se mareez ko tabiib, haath too apna mat lagaa
Isko khuda pe chord de, bahr'e khuda jo ho so ho

Aql ke madrasee se uthh, ishq ke maikade mein aa
Jaam'e fanaa'o bekhudi, ab to piya jo ho so ho

Laag ki aag lagte hi panba namad ye jal gaya
Rakhte vujood-e-jaan-otan kuchh na bacha jo ho so ho

Hijr ki jo museebatein, arz kiin uske rubaru
Naaz'o adaa se muskura, kehne lagaa jo ho so ho

Hasti ke is saraab mein, raat ki raat bas rahe
Subh'e adam huaa numoo, paaon uthha jo ho so ho

Duniya ke nek'o bad se kaam, humko niyaz kuch nahin
Aap se jo guzar gaya, ussey kia jo ho so ho

when my Shyam isn't home

The bewitched birds, my nemesis
go on singing your name

Even if the world overlooks me, you, one shouldn't
my desires are tied with you

You are my valor and honor
You are one who fashions me

Leaving your door, where would I go
You are the caregiver of us poor

Make me yours or let me go
my repute is in your hands

This deep river is very hard/intricate
and my knot is empty

Help Cross the boat of inapt me

My beloved has gone away

Hazrat Shah Niyaz (1742-1834).

Posted again after the comment from Asif Hasnain from Vienna.

"Just beautiful, both the kalaam and the rendition. Transports the listener. The power of love of music, of the creator, of life, of the eternal. Thank you for this wonderful post, which I came across just now. " Asif Hasnain.

There was a beautiful mood created that night which can be felt through this particular ghazal. Both the qawwals and the audience were in heaven and feeding off each other. The style (andaaz-e-bayan) takes me back to other recitals I heard during my childhood.

Mountains of agony, i bear in your love now, come what may.
The luxuries of life, i forsake now, come what may.

In the fervor of love, the threads of being seared,
the fabric of body, form, self; all charred now, come what may.

Rise from the seminary of reason, enter the tavern of love
From chalice of annihilation and selflessness, drink now, come what may.

The pangs of seperation, I bared before the beloved
With an airy smile said, "now, come what may."

In the mirage of this body, I seek the night only
And if Adam appears with the morning, I could raise the feet, come what may!

I'd like to thank all who were present in this beautiful mehfil for helping create an atmosphere where we were witness to such a wonderful recital. Farid bhai was lost in a world of his own..... This one is especially dedicated to Siddiq Akbar Khan my friend and fellow lover of Iqbal.

Farid Ayaz & Abu Muhammad Qawwal Ensemble

Kabhi aye Haqeeqat-e-muntazar, nazar aa libas-e-majaz mein
ke hazar sajde tarap rahe hain meri jabeen-e-niaz mein

For once, O awaited Reality, reveal Yourself in a form material,
For a thousand prostrations are quivering eagerly in my submissive brow

Tu bacha bacha ke na rakh Issey, tera aaeena hai voh aaeena
ke shikast ho to aziz tar hai nigah-e-aaeena saaz mein
Farid Ayaz and Abu Muhammad @ Ghar ki Mehfil, Brossard, Quebec
Photo: Muslim Harji
Do not try to protect them, your mirror is the mirror
Which would be dearer in the Maker's eye if they broken are

Na kaheen jahan mein amaan milli, jo amaan milli to kahan milli
mere jurm-e-khana kharab ko, tere afw-e-banda nawaz mein

My dark misdeeds found no refuge in the wide world—
The only refuge they found was in Your Gracious Forgiveness

Na voh ishq mein raheen garmiyaan, na voh husn mein raheen shaukiyan
na voh ghaznavi mein tarrap rahi, na kham hai zulf-e-zyaz mein

Neither love has that warmth, nor beauty has that humour
Neither that restlessness in Ghaznavi nor those curls in the hair locks of Ayaz are,

Jo mein sar basajda huwa kabhi, to zameen se aane lagi sada
tera dil to hai sanam aashna, tujhe kya miley ga namaz mein

Even as I laid down my head in prostration a cry arose from the ground:
Your heart is in materialism, no rewards for your prayers are.

Were my whole body festooned with eyes,
I would gaze at my Master with untiring zeal.

O, how I wish that every pore of my body Would turn into a million eyes –
Then, as some closed to blink, others would open to see!

But even then my thirst to see him Might remain unquesnched.
What else am I to do?

To me, O Bahu, a glimpse of my Master Is worth millions of pilgrimages to the holy Ka’ba!

Zubaan Pay Labaik Her Nafas Mein, Jabeen Pay Sajda Hai
Her Qadam Pay
Yoon Ja Raha But-Kaday Ko Natik, Ke Jaisay Kaa'bay
Ko Ja Raha Hoon

Bujhi Hui Shama Ka Dhuan Hoon, Aur Apnay Markaz Ko Ja Raha Hoon
Ke Dil Ki Hasrat To Mit Chuki Hai, Ub Apni Hasti Mita Raha Hoon

English Translation:

I am the smoke of an extinguishd candle, and going towards my grave
My heart doesnt have wishes anymore, now i am destroying my existence.

Only to see your face, I am getting images of idols
So that i can assimilate their splendity, and make a thought
(imagination) of you.

I have hidden myself in a shroud, so that you dont have the trouble
of putting on the veil.
By making a veil for myself, I am lifting your veil.

There they leave the home and here I am dying
God! How is this Qayaamat, they are comig and I am going.

Love is man's nature, where is the possibility of leaving love,
The more I try to forget them, the more I remember them.

'I am here' on the tongue, in every soul, forhead is in prostration
on every step
Naatiq is going to the temple, as if he is going to the Ka'aba
(mosque).

Naatiq = a person who is intelligent or a person who can talk.
